How to make a homemade chicken plucker?

First of all, have a look at the parts that you might require for the construction:

  • Wood: You will need timber for the purpose of framing. There is no need to buy wood of high quality and can go for a cheaper option.
  • Barrel: This is the place where the chicken will be kept for the purpose of de-feathering.

Driver Wheel

Make your driver wheel using the timber. The size of the driver wheel is largely related to the power delivered. Usually the motors are in the range of 1700 rpm. A faster wheel will help in removing the feathers more efficiently.

Plucker Wheel

The plucker wheel needs to be made from heavy duty plywood and plastic trash can lid. First of all, cut out a square portion of the plywood with a length of 2 inches more than that of the diameter of the wheel. For bringing it to the shape of a round wheel, you can use a bandsaw or sabre saw. You need to cut the wood in such a way that that the center hole is dug at a distance equal to the radius of the wheel from the edge.

For example, if the diameter of the wheel is 22 inches, the radius would be 11 inches and this should be the length at which the center hole has to be dug. The central hole should be ½ inch in diameter.

The Plucking Fingers

You will be required to dig holes into the wheel plate wheel finger plate. The dimension of each hole should be about ¾ inches. Now, as to insert the fingers into the holes, you can make some of the fingers to point down. This is mainly to avoid the blockage issues with the feathers. Homemade chicken plucker fingers are an important piece to the puzzle.

While drilling the holes, care must be taken so that the holes are equally spaced from each other and the operation of a finger does not affect the other in way. You can use a Roughneck trash for the purpose of making the lid and will have to cut it in the right size and shape. For installing the plucking fingers, it is better to wear gloves to be on the safer side. The smaller end of the fingers must be pushed into the lid.

The Frame

Use the remaining timbers to build the frame. Always keep in mind that the frame has to be taller than the barrel. There has to be a primary square frame and the bearing boards should then be fixed in their places.

Motor Mounting

The speed of rotation of the motor is usually the most important thing and it usually comes with a vbelt pulley. Be careful while mounting the motor since this is the most vital area. When you go to build a chicken plucker make sure that you take the proper time needed to mount the motor. You do not want any mishaps while operating.

Barrel Assembly

For the nest step in the homemade chicken plucker plans is the barrel assembly. This is not an overly difficult part in the process, but requires some patience. Now as for the barrel, you need to dig holes in it so that the axle can easily pass through.

Plucker Axel Assembly

This is another important part of the plucker. Put the barrel into the frame and the bearings in their proper places. The driver pulley should be kept within the two collars.
