Buying clean, de-feathered chicken pieces is a costly affair. It is much better to buy raw chicken and de-feather it yourself. However, this is easier said than implemented. After all, who will take the trouble of removing the feathers for hours! Using your own homemade chicken plucker can be a good alternative, but they are may not be affordable by all.
The good news for people who are looking for an easy way to pluck the chicken feathers is you can easily make your own chicken plucker at home by following some simple steps. If you’re looking for a great informative article about to purchase a brand new chicken plucker, click here.
There are various ways to design a homemade chicken plucker, one of them being the Whizbang Style Plucker. This plucker has been mentioned in the book “Anyone can build a tub-size mechanical plucker” by Herrick Kimball. In fact, he was the first person to design this type of a plucker and also a seller of rubber fingers, which form an integral part of these pluckers.
How to make a homemade chicken plucker?
First of all, have a look at the parts that you might require for the construction:
- Wood: You will need timber for the purpose of framing. There is no need to buy wood of high quality and can go for a cheaper option.
- Barrel: This is the place where the chicken will be kept for the purpose of de-feathering.
- Motor: This motor will be used for driving power to the plucker. Greater the power specifications of the motor, better will be its ability to de-feather. It will be able to de-feather more number of chickens as a result.
- Shower head: There must be a shower head placed at the top of a barrel so that it can clean the chickens in an effective manner. If you want to save your budget, you can even by pex pipes instead of the shower head.
- Wheels: You will need to attach wheels to the base of the plucker so that it is easily movable from one place to the other.
- Switch: You will be surprised to know that many of the pluckers that are commonly available in the market do not have any switch. But it is better to buy a water-proof electric switch from a hardware shop for making your homemade chicken plucker.
There are a few other components that you will require for your chicken plucker plans and they are PVC fittings, PVC to hose fittings, press fit bearings, plucker shafts, shaft collars and vbelt.
Once you have acquired all the component parts, it is the time to start the building process.
Make your driver wheel using the timber. The size of the driver wheel is largely related to the power delivered. Usually the motors are in the range of 1700 rpm. A faster wheel will help in removing the feathers more efficiently.
The plucker wheel needs to be made from heavy duty plywood and plastic trash can lid. First of all, cut out a square portion of the plywood with a length of 2 inches more than that of the diameter of the wheel. For bringing it to the shape of a round wheel, you can use a bandsaw or sabre saw. You need to cut the wood in such a way that that the center hole is dug at a distance equal to the radius of the wheel from the edge.
For example, if the diameter of the wheel is 22 inches, the radius would be 11 inches and this should be the length at which the center hole has to be dug. The central hole should be ½ inch in diameter.
The Plucking Fingers
You will be required to dig holes into the wheel plate wheel finger plate. The dimension of each hole should be about ¾ inches. Now, as to insert the fingers into the holes, you can make some of the fingers to point down. This is mainly to avoid the blockage issues with the feathers. Homemade chicken plucker fingers are an important piece to the puzzle.
While drilling the holes, care must be taken so that the holes are equally spaced from each other and the operation of a finger does not affect the other in way. You can use a Roughneck trash for the purpose of making the lid and will have to cut it in the right size and shape. For installing the plucking fingers, it is better to wear gloves to be on the safer side. The smaller end of the fingers must be pushed into the lid.
Use the remaining timbers to build the frame. Always keep in mind that the frame has to be taller than the barrel. There has to be a primary square frame and the bearing boards should then be fixed in their places.
The speed of rotation of the motor is usually the most important thing and it usually comes with a vbelt pulley. Be careful while mounting the motor since this is the most vital area. When you go to build a chicken plucker make sure that you take the proper time needed to mount the motor. You do not want any mishaps while operating.
For the nest step in the homemade chicken plucker plans is the barrel assembly. This is not an overly difficult part in the process, but requires some patience. Now as for the barrel, you need to dig holes in it so that the axle can easily pass through.
Plucker Axel Assembly
This is another important part of the plucker. Put the barrel into the frame and the bearings in their proper places. The driver pulley should be kept within the two collars.
Wheel Mounting Plates
This involves some metal work and you will require a lot of cutting and pressing. Take your time as your homemade chicken plucker will need to be operational for a long time to come. It is important to do your best work.
This part involves the installation of the lawn mower wheel, the washer and the nuts and cutting the rod to a desired length. Any DIY chicken plucker machine might have some lopsided wheels. Avoid this by taking your time.
Now, make the electric connections with the switch. It will ensure the safety of your plucker and this is an important step since it is a wet station.
Finally, bring in the feather-basket for collecting the feathers. Also, fit the shower head and paint the plucker to make it look better.
Your diy chicken plucker machine will be ready! It is a great thing to be incorporated into your farm and saves both your money and time!
